Construction is underway on a company that promises to bring several hundred new jobs to Tyler.
The health insurance company, Centene, is the first to build in Tyler's new Business and Technology Park.
Dirt flew Monday as local leaders and Centene employees broke ground for the first time at the new park.
"We've never had a business and technology park, Centene is the first tenant, and they are a model for what we're looking for to help fill out the park," says Tom Mullins, a member of Tyler's Economic Development Council.
Centene's new 50,000 square foot claims and processing facility will sit off of Earl Campbell Parkway and South Bennett Avenue, near Loop 323.
The company considered building in several other places, both in and outside of Texas, but says Tyler offers the entire package.
"It's the total environment, there's not one single factor. It's all the things that make Tyler great, that you know so well, we saw very quickly," says Michael Neidorff, Centene chairman, president and CEO.
Neidorff says construction on the new facility should be finished in about a year. He also says the company will bring 327 jobs to Tyler.
"Texas is a big market for us, and we believe the jobs should be in the markets where we're doing the business," Neidorff says.
"We know our energy sector is going to be going up and down, we know our manufacturing sector is going down, so we need to attract these knowledge based technology based jobs for Tyler to grow into the future," Mullins says.
Centene has a temporary facility set up at the Grande Boulevard Plaza in Tyler. The company says they are already looking for new employees online and are working with Tyler Junior College to fill positions.
Neidorff says not every available position requires a college degree, and the average salary and benefits for the new jobs is around $45,000.
Centene Corporation is the nation's fourth-largest Medicaid manager. They provide programs and related services to under-insured and uninsured individuals.
Centene is a publicly-traded health insurance company, headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Centene Company of Texas, L. P., a subsidiary of Centene Corporation, is the company building a new facility in Tyler.
