RUSK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Five cattle and one horse are dead following a vehicle crash involving a livestock trailer just east of Reklaw Monday morning.

According to DPS, Pete Stokes, of Garrison, was passing a vehicle when it turned in front of him. He swerved to miss the vehicle and the stock trailer came loose and rolled down an embankment.

According to Trooper Jake Leblanc, Stokes did not have his safety chains hooked up.

Stokes is OK, but five head of cattle and one horse died. Two other horses are injured. Two head of cattle escaped.

Stokes was on his way to sell the livestock.

Stokes will be cited for not using trailer safety chains. The other vehicle left the scene and DPS is trying to find the driver.
