Scabies outbreak at Kilgore College in Longview

Posted: Updated:

Part of Kilgore College in Longview is dealing with a scabies outbreak.

Men and women in white protective suits deep cleaned the cosmetology school on Friday to kill any scabies mites left behind.

"Our first priority is the health and safety of our students, our employees, and our clients, so we are going above and beyond to ensure that everything is ok," says Dr. Julie Fowler, Executive Dean at Kilgore College Longview.

Two students at the school have scabies. To avoid the spread of scabies, the school canceled cosmetology classes and called a professional cleaning company.

The cleaning company they called handles all kinds of disasters but says scabies is not a common cleanup request.

"I mean, you don't deal with outbreaks like this on a regular basis, but when we do get the call, we're ready," says Seth McCartney, a sales representative for Service Master Clean in Longview.

"Scabies is annoying and it's bothersome but it is not a life-threatening infection and it is treatable," said KLTV 7's Med Team Doctor Ed Dominguez.

Still, students outside of the cosmetology school wish Kilgore College would have notified them about the outbreak.

"Just send me an e-mail or a Facebook message to let us know," says Charisa Clemons, a student at Kilgore College.

The cosmetology building is separate from the main campus so other classes in Longview went on as usual today.

Any other classrooms the cosmetology students use in the main building are also being deep cleaned. The dean says regular cosmetology classes will resume on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

You can get scabies from direct contact with a person or animal who has the parasite. Symptoms include red bumps and blisters that produce a rash.

Kilgore College is requiring anyone who is infected to bring a doctors release before they can return to school.
