A Huntsville woman said a truck which was found burning in Lufkin Friday morning was stolen from her in Huntsville while she was dropping her child off at daycare.
Firefighters responded to the vehicle fire call near the intersection of Southwood Drive and Old U.S. Highway 59 at about 8:30 a.m. Friday.
"My son's aunt like's yall's Facebook page, and I guess whenever she was on Facebook this morning and was scrolling through her news feed, she seen a truck that looked like mine," Candice Pitman, the truck's owner, said in a phone interview.
Pitman was able to view the inital photos on Facebook and identify key markings on the vehicle.
"In the one picture, where the fireman is walking in front, and the doors are open, the rims, they look just like mine," Pitman said.
When fire crews arrived, they found a unattended late-model silver GMC Sierra fully engulfed in flames. They got the fire under control a short time later. No driver was in sight, and the flames gutted the cab of the pickup.
Pitman said she left her pickup and took the keys Thursday at 9:20 a.m. at her child's daycare. When she came back, the pickup was gone.
"I walked out of my son's daycare, and my truck was no longer there, and I thought somebody was playing a joke on me," Pitman said. "So I went back into the daycare, and came back out to make sure I wasn't losing my mind, and somebody wasn't playing a joke on me. So I went back inside and called police"
Pitman said she filed a report with Huntsville Police and did not have any idea where the pickup was until a friend of hers saw a photo of the car burned on the KTRE Facebook page. Pitman said she knew it was her pickup because she recognized a dent and the tire rims. She was also able to verify the license plate numbers.
Since the initial report was posted, the authorities have determined that the fire was arson, but they cannot give any more details because it's still under investigation.
