Disaster drill to be held at Tyler airport Thursday night

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

If you're planning to be near the Tyler Pounds Regional Airport late Thursday night, don't be alarmed if you see a lot of emergency vehicles.

As they say, it's only a drill.

Emergency responders from several East Texas agencies will be at the airport around 10:30 p.m. Thursday to take part in a simulated tornado drill near the commercial terminal area.

There will be seven or eight agencies taking part in the drill, including the Tyler Fire and Police Departments and TSA officials.

They will wait for the last flight to land and for those passengers to leave the airport before they get started.

They're going to be going through a simulated tornado drill, which will include how to keep passengers safe during a storm or how to start the recovery process of an airport if it's shut down because of a storm.

Airport personnel said today they have several goals for the exercise.

"We want to make sure and test elements like good communication, alerting our personnel, making sure that we can respond," said Davis Dickson, Airport Manager of the Tyler Pounds Regional Airport. "This scenario's a little different than we've done before. This will be at night, where staffing levels are different, shifts may be lighter than in the day shift, and making sure that those communication elements are tested."

One of the things they're testing is radio frequencies - each agency has its own radio system operating on its own frequency and they want to see how all of these agencies communicate with each other.
