A man who Lufkin Police identified as a person-of-interest in the door kick burglaries is now charged with burglary of a habitation, according to jail records.
Police arrested Corey Fleming, 42, of Lufkin, Tuesday night after he pulled in front of a police officer looking for a suspicious person who a homeowner said ran through her back yard.
Police spokesman JB Smith said police conducted a search warrant on Fleming's home and found evidence linking him to at least one recent burglary, on Sept. 9 in the 300 block of York Drive. He denied involvement in that burglary, but one of the items had the victim's name on it, Smith said. Other items were seized from his residence for further investigation.
The officer took Fleming into custody on charges of no driver's license and failure to yield right-of-way. He then was questioned by police in relation to the door kick burglaries.
Police spokesman JB Smith said Fleming fit a very general description of the serial burglar.
The homeowner flagged down a patrolling officer at 7:07 p.m. in the area of the intersection of Champions Drive and Walden Court. The homeowner said she saw a man in her back yard.
The officer drove near the Deerwoods II Apartments, where Fleming pulled in front of her, cutting her off, Smith said.
Lufkin Police have been investigating a series of burglaries for a few months in which someone kicks down the back doors to get into homes to burglarize them.
The investigation continues so that any other burglaries committed by Fleming will be properly identified and linked to him, Smith said.
