MONROE, OH (FOX19) -

A  reward is being offered for information in the murder of an elderly woman.

Barbara Howe, 86, was found dead in the trunk of her car last week after she had been reported missing. Investigators are calling her death a homicide.

Howe had lived at the Mount Pleasant Retirement Village for about five years. Her car was found in Middletown.

Detectives are reluctant to release much information regarding where the investigation stands or how Howe became the victim of this tragedy.

On Wednesday, it was announced that the community she lived in wants to do its part to find the person or people responsible.

"We are very much a family here at Mount Pleasant," said Stan Kappers, executive director of Mount Pleasant Retirement Village. "Barbara Howe was a special person and a dear friend to many of us."

Shaken by the news of their neighbor's murder, the retirement village is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of whoever is responsible.

Additionally, Howe's Hamilton High graduating class of 1943 is matching that reward, bringing the total to $10,000.

"We have had a fair quantity of tips come in," explained Gregg Myers, a detective with the City of Monroe Police Department. "We're following them all whether they appear to be relevant or not. We're following every avenue we possibly have."

Detective Myers would not say whether Howe was targeted or if the incident was random, but he said everyone remains on alert.

"There are worries," Myers added. "That would be certainly natural and common. There are worries everywhere, not necessary in just this community."

Barbara Howe's three daughters, granddaughter and son-in-law were at Wednesday's announcement, but the family is asking for privacy during this difficult time.
