Baby rescued from busy Smith Co. highway

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A baby was rescued from a busy East Texas highway by two Good Samaritans Tuesday morning.

According to Smith County Sheriff's Lt. Larry Wiginton, dispatchers received a call from a driver who said a baby was in the middle of FM 14.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle stopped and got the baby to safety, and waited for Sheriff's Deputies to arrive. EMS arrived on the scene and checked out the baby, who was fine.

When deputies arrived on the scene, neighbors were able to lead them to the house where the child's grandmother lived. The baby's mother left the child with the grandmother to go to work earlier.

When deputies entered the house, they found the grandmother unconscious on the floor. She apparently suffers from seizures. EMS checked the grandmother out who eventually woke up, and the mother returned home from work.

Smith County Sheriff's Deputies are still on the scene trying to figure out how the baby was able to get out of the house.

We will have more information as it becomes available.
