No one may understand healthcare issues for veterans more than 66 year old Robert Arrington. Arrington who lives with his wife Doris in Lufkin recently learned about a new research program during a visit to the local VA clinic.
"It's a very good idea to supply doctors with as much information as you can possibly give them, otherwise it's guess work," said Arrington.
The program Arrington found out about was the Million Veteran Program. MVP is a program opened to all veterans . It's goal is to provide gene research that will help with future medications for veterans. Arrington drove to Houston just hoping to help with the cause... , he was surprised at what followed.
"Knew it wouldn't take but 20 minutes, so we decided to go ahead and get that done and then we had some Christmas shopping we needed to do, so we took care of that and we walked in the room and I found out I was number 5,000," said Arrington.
For being the 5,000th volunteer Arrington received:
"It's a pin to show that I participated. They took my picture," Arrington said.
Arrington said he didn't need any recognition and hopes that more local veterans will participate because it can only produce good results.
"I encourage veterans to get into this, because the accumulated knowledge they get out of this DNA testing will help everybody," said Arrington.
