TISD highlights school programs that are putting kids first

Posted: Updated:

Spirits are high in the Tyler Independent School District after its annual State of the District luncheon.

Many TISD supporters and employees attended Wednesday's presentation at Willowbrook Country Club in Tyler. TISD's interim superintendent, Gary Mooring, used the event to highlight the district's theme for the year, "Students First."

"Every decision, every program that is considered, we must ask, 'What is best for the students?'" Mooring said.

Mooring highlighted several school programs for implementing that theme by enhancing the learning process for Tyler students. Students participating in those school programs made videos to show everyone at the luncheon what they are learning.

Jack Elementary School highlighted its "Leader in Me" program.

Students at Boulter Middle School showed everyone what their "Engineering Prep" after-school program is all about.

The final program highlighted was the "Career and Technical Education PLAYhouse," where students in TISD architecture and construction technology classes are partnering with construction companies to design and build playhouses.

Mooring discussed Tyler ISD's continuing community partnerships to wrap up the presentation.

TISD is planning a new Career & Technical Education center with programs designed to match local workforce needs.

When asked if he was planning on staying and becoming the TISD superintendent, Mooring said, "I'm here to help and be in the capacity for the length of time that they need me to be."
