Nevada statutory rape PSA targets young men

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A public service announcement which targets men between the ages of 18 and 21 who are or know those who are sleeping with underage girls is filling radio airwaves across Nevada.

The Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence produced the radio spot and launched their website Shesnotoldenough.com this month.

Executive Director Sue Meuschke hopes the efforts will help reduce teen pregnancy numbers through men.

"Not just... someone who maybe having sex with an underage girl, but his friends," Meuschke told FOX5.

FOX5 played the ad for 15-year-old Gabriel Garcia from Henderson, who has friends who are 18 and older.

He doesn't believe the ad will work.

"Everyone's going to go to their friends and give them a high five if they had sex with a girl," Gabriel told FOX5.

But Meuschke says currently the teen pregnancy rates in Nevada are alarming.

In 2009, 10 teen births occurred per day, with adult men fathering 60 percent of the babies born to teen mothers.

"We want to engage young men in thinking about their behavior and how it might impact someone's life," Meuschke said.

But Gabriel said others in his generation will probably laugh at the radio ad.

"This is dumb, this is not going to work. We're just going to keep sleeping around," Gabriel said.
