An elderly Tyler man is dead after a one car accident Friday morning. It happened at the intersection of Golden Road and Fifth Street just after 11:30 am. The car struck a utility pole, went airborn and flipped over. The car then caught fire.
Witnesses rushed to help the victim. "I was talking on the pay phone," said Lucas Gildreath. "I guess this guy hit the telephone pole and started flipping towards me, the car caught on fire, so I came in here got the fire extinguisher and told them to call the police. We tried to help him. We emptied the fire extinguisher on the car, then we cut off the seat belt and we tried to get him out, but he was wedged in there."
The driver was taken to ETMC where he was later pronounced dead. He was identified as 90-year-old Arthur William Vickers of Tyler. No other people or cars were involved in the crash.
