Lattimore suffers knee ligament damage

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) -

Marcus Lattimore suffered a dislocation to his right knee and had damage to several ligaments when he was hit during South Carolina's game against Tennessee on Saturday, but the Running Back avoided any fractures or additional injuries according to a statement from the school on Sunday.

Lattimore was injured in the second quarter and had to be taken off the field by cart after teammates and members of the Volunteers surrounded him while he was down.

This is the 2nd season ending injury he's suffered in the last 2 seasons. He tore ligaments in his left knee last year.

Lattimore is resting comfortably according to the school and has begun the process of prehabilitation before his surgery.

Head Coach Steve Spurrier revealed during his weekly teleconference that Lattimore's knee had dislocated. He also said that he was "optimistic that Lattimore's football days are still ahead of him."

"I truly believe Marcus could be the most popular South Carolina football player that's ever been here," said Spurrier. "Even our opponents, they don't trash talk Marcus.  They have tremendous respect for him.  He's such a well-respected young man."

The coach also noted that, since Lattimore has never been red-shirted, that could be an option for next season to allow him to return in 2014 although he wouldn't rule out the chance that the Running Back could return next season.

South Carolina also announced that they will be holding a "Happy Birthday and Get Well Marcus" celebration Monday on the horseshoe for Lattimore's 21st birthday. Spurrier, members of the football team and University President Harris Pastides are expected to speak to the crowd.
