ETX pastor challenges Ted Cruz at local event

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Republican Senate Candidate Ted Cruz stopped by East Texas to speak to some of his biggest supporters.

"Grassroots America We the People" hosted Cruz at  Tyler Church, and audience members had the chance to ask the candidate questions.

When asked, "What key points from your campaign can you tell East Texans you will bring back to Washington D.C.?"

He responded, " The Obama campaign isn't working. Twenty-three million people are struggling to find workers. We need to get our economy going; we need to get small business going; we need to get America back to work," said Ted Cruz.

One pastor asked Cruz if elected as senator, would he work to overturn the 1954 Johnson Amendment, which prohibits non-profits and churches from endorsing or opposing political candidates.

The pastor told Cruz that the amendment is a violation of Americans' individual rights of freedom of speech.

Cruz agreed that if elected as senator, he would work to overturn that amendment.

Cruz is scheduled to be in Houston over the weekend and Beaumont on Monday.
