Freedom Fighters: Aalon Ferguson

By Joan Hallmark

Aalon Ferguson was only 18 and a senior in high school, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Two months after the attack he joined the army with a salary of $21 a month.

The U.S. stopped the Japanese but not before they had gobbled up much of the Pacific.

After the Philippines, Netherlands Indies and Bataan had fallen to the Japanese, the allied victory at Midway in June of 1942, and the marine landing on  Guadalcanal finally ended Japanese Eastern expension but not without a heavy cost.

In addition to heavy fighting, malaria and other diseases unfamiliar to the American troops took their toll.

The battle in Guadalcanal raged for weeks as the marines fought to overcome deeply entrenched Japanese forces.
