POLK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Polk County authorities are searching for an Indiana man accused of running away from a state trooper while he was being arrested for driving a stolen car Wednesday morning.
DPS spokesman David Hendry said a trooper had stopped a northbound Mazda 6 on US 59, just south of Seven Oaks for speeding at 9:56 a.m.
The trooper learned the car, which had Indiana plates, was stolen and began arresting the driver, Dennarious Cortes Banyon, 24, of Indianapolis. The trooper had one handcuff on Banyon when Banyon hit the trooper in the head and injuring him, Hendry said. It is not clear if Banyon hit him with a fist or the handcuff.
Banyon ran across the highway and into a wooded area.
Authorities have brought in search dogs from Livingston to search for Banyon.
Hendry said Banyon was wearing a red tank top and black shorts. Anyone traveling in the area who sees him should contact the sheriff's office at 936-327-6810.
Banyon had two passengers, Anthony Depaul Evans and Quintez Dwight Wilson, both of Indianapolis.
Authorities found a usable amount of marijuana in the vehicle and arrested both passengers.
