Huckabee honors Boys and Girls Club students in ETX visit
Former Gov. Mike Huckabee
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
Former Arkansas governor and 2008 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee stopped in Tyler Tuesday night to honor some special students.
Huckabee paid tribute to 11 East Texas students as part of the Boys and Girls Club of East Texas's annual "Champions of Youth" program.
The program serves as a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club to provide scholarships for students to attend their after-school programs, and this year, organizers said they wanted a celebrity to come to honor the students and speak to the crowd.
"We felt like a lot of East Texans were familiar with him and interested in him," said Deanna Sims, a Boys and Girls Club of East Texas board member and a co-chair of the event. "I think he represents a lot of the values of East Texas. But also it was nice to have someone who has a journalistic perspective to let us know, during such a crucial time with our elections, sort of the inside scoop of what's going on."
Huckabee also played his bass guitar with a local band and one attendee won a guitar signed by Huckabee.
The Boys and Girls Club of East Texas serves more than 600 students in 13 locations.
