MHSAA hands out sanctions for Vicksburg-Murrah fight

Posted: Updated:

The Mississippi High School Activities Association has handed out sanctions to Vicksburg and Murrah high schools following a fight during last Friday's game in Vicksburg.

The game was suspended and Vicksburg coach Tavarius Johnson was hospitalized following the incident.

Both Murrah and Vicksburg are ineligible for the playoffs, and will be on probation through the 2013-14 regular season.

In addition, any players who left the bench during the fight are suspended for one game, and those involved in the fight are suspended for two games.

All of this punishment is spelled out in the MHSAA handbook.

The organization doesn't believe the Vicksburg coach's injury or medical condition was caused by anyone connected with Murrah's team.

Vicksburg-Warren School Superintendent Dr. Liz Swinford said in a statement that Vicksburg will cancel it's two remaining football games.

Swinford says that a majority of the Vicksburg players left the bench during the fight, and the suspensions will not leave the team enough players to play those games.

Several Murrah players are also suspended, but the team will have enough players eligible to complete the season. Most of Murrah's players were suspended for coming on the field during the fight, according to a press release.

"Murrah football players are remorseful and accept the penalty for their actions" said Clinton Johnson, JPS Athletic Director. "We teach athletes to play by the rules and when we break them, we must suffer the consequences."
