Zombie transformation, tricks behind the makeup

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

The Second Annual Downtown Tyler "Show Us Your Shorts" Film Festival will be kicking off Wednesday at Liberty Hall.

This year the festival has gone international with entries from England, Australia and Italy, along with entries from all over the U.S.

Following the screenings will be a couple of free workshops for the public to participate in on Saturday, one of them being the zombie makeup technique class.

"Originality is key. Nobody wants to see the same monster over and over again, so you have to be cool and different because that's going to make your work stand out from everybody else's," says makeup effects artist, Ryan Laepple.

That is where makeup effects artists, Erin Jones and Ryan Laepple come into play, here to teach you the techniques to set yourself apart from others.

"We'll be using things like latex, toilet paper for latex build-ups and we'll use alcohol make up and maybe some grease that sort of thing," says Laepple.

"You really never know what the outcomes going to be until you're all the way done. You can have an idea and it can go totally great, or it can go totally wrong," says Jones.

The makeup techniques they'll be showing will take less than an hour to do from start to finish.

"The horror market especially. There is a lot of competition there, so you have to be creative, you have to be able to stand on your on two feet. Make up is key, a character is key, without the make up there is no character and vice versa," says Laepple.

The workshop will be this Saturday at Gallery Main Street at 1p.m.

The workshop is free and open to the public.
