Lon Morris missed at Region 14 Media Day

Lon Morris athletics were shut down in June, but today it hit the rest of Region 14.  As conference coaches came together for the basketball media day, there was a large void on the men's and women's side.

"It's one of those situations where you're going to miss that," said TJC women's coach Trenia Jones.  "You're going to miss going in that gym. I tell people, I going to miss the popcorn because I loved the popcorn at Lon Morris College and Dale Dotson always made sure I had some."

The popcorn isn't the only thing coaches will miss.

"I hate it," said Jacksonville College men's coach Jody Bailey.  "It was neat and something special to play someone two and a half minutes down the road. Now to replace that just doesn't seem right."

Lon Morris' departure also made things difficult for scheduling.

"It's really sad because now some of us are down two games because of how late it happened," said Kilgore College women's coach Roy Thomas.  "It's really sad for them because they were apart of this conference for such a long time."

The Lufkin Panthers have not made it past the first round of the football playoffs since 2012. The team this year has a different feel to it and is hopeful that stat will be erased Friday night when they host Rockwall-Heath in the Bi-District Round of the 6A playoffs.
