Douglas starts 'Trunk or Treat' tradition

Posted: Updated:
DOUGLAS, GA (WALB) -

The City of Douglas wants to start what they think will be a safer alternative top tradition 'trick or treating' this year. They want organizations and churches to put goodies in car trunks in their parking lots and let kids come by as they would visit someone's home for Halloween treats.

Here is the city's news release-

As Halloween quickly approaches, the City of Douglas asks neighborhoods to observe this traditional holiday on Wednesday, October 31st. The City of Douglas is seeking local churches or community organizations who will host "Trunk or Treat" or some type of Fall Carnival as a way for community outreach on Halloween night.

"If local churches or community volunteers are offering a Fall Festival or "Trunk or Treat" on Halloween night, we want to know so we can spread the word in our community," says Terrell Jacobs, City Manager.

Trunk or Treating is a safe alternative for organizations and churches to spread their community efforts of outreach. Members of the organization or church park their vehicles, open their trunks, and kids come around as if they were "trick or treating" from house to house.

The Douglas Police Department asks that parents do not allow their kids to be out past 9:00pm so that residents in participating neighborhoods will not be disturbed past the nine o'clock curfew. Drivers are urged not to impede the flow of traffic on neighborhood streets. Halloween participants are asked to show courtesy and respect to neighborhoods by ceasing to collect candy by 9:00pm. Also, motorists are advised not to impede traffic flow by parking

vehicles on public streets and sidewalks. The Police Department also asks drivers not to park on the grass and in the yards of homeowners. Motorists may be cited for violations.

If your church or organization will be participating in "Trunk or Treat" some other type of fall carnival event, please notify the City of Douglas by calling 912-383-0277, 912-398-3401 or email ghenderson@cityofdouglas.com .
