A local university is taking a principled stand against a provision of the government's revision of the healthcare system or Obamacare. East Texas Baptist University is has filed a law suit along with Houston Baptist University to seek relief from a provision of Obamacare that requires schools like E-T-B-U to provide emergency contraception to university employees as part of their healthcare benefits. The schools feel this is a violation of first amendment rights as well as the guiding words of the Bible. There have been a lot of lawsuits filed to block different provisions of the healthcare reform act but this one is not financially motivated, it is based on the foundational beliefs of the organizations. And it makes sense. No business should be forced to compromise a core belief when it comes to healthcare benefits. Now, if the university looses the suit, they will be faced with either eliminating insurance benefits and potentially facing a fine or holding firm on the point of not providing emergency contraception and face other legal consequences. This is another good example of where healthcare reform has over-stepped the goal of changing the process of healthcare in America and is pushing moral beliefs and conditions that should not be legislated.
