East Texans support breast cancer awareness with art bras

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Some East Texans are showing their support for breast cancer awareness month by decorating and displaying a garment that women usually keep concealed.

Promoting breast cancer awareness just got more creative, 18 ordinary bras have been transformed into art bras for the 4th annual Art Bra Contest at Memorial Health Center in Lufkin.

Memorial Health, Power of Pink coordinator, Lindsey Mott says Victoria Secret donated the bras and folks in the community decorated them. "It's just a fun way for breast cancer awareness…to promote breast cancer awareness within the community."

Bling on a Cure, Don't be a chicken…Start checkin and Fight like a Girl are just a few of the themes in this year's collection.

Mott says,"If you have a great idea for being arts or crafty with a bra, that's all you have to do is grab a bra and decorate it. It's real simple. It doesn't have to be fancy."

The bras range from super simple to really ornate and elaborate but the message is all the same: promoting breast cancer awareness.

Mott says, "I feel it's a way for people to come together and show that you're not alone and that we support each other. You have more than just your family as a support network, you have a whole community that's behind you."

The top 3 winners and People's Choice will be announced and modeled at the Power of Pink luncheon this Thursday.

There is still time to vote for your favorite art bra. Go tohttp://www.memorialhealth.us/community/poll to look at all 18 bras and pick your favorite.
