Wheelchair basketball team organized in Longview

Meet the newest team to East Texas.  The Longview Heat. The team was recently launched with hopes of giving disabled children in East Texas the chance to participate in team sports.

They have a starting five, but they need more players.

"It's fun when you can't do things other kids can," said Joshua Sanders.   "You can finally do something in Longview."

Team team is currently open to kids ages 7 to 13, but plans on expanding in the future.  Suzzane Sanders is responsible for the team coming together.  The occupational therapist wanted to give her son Joshua the chance to be part of a team.  Sanders launched East Texas Wheelchair Sports.

"In talking to the parents and seeing tears in their eyes, they wanted something like this for so long but didn't know how to plug in," said Sanders.  "We're doing drills, we're working on kids learning the rules. We're going to play Shreveport in November just as fun recreation time and then have a competitive tournament in the spring."

Sanders says the group plans on transitioning to other sports as well.  If you're interested in helping or have a disabled child interested in playing wheelchair sports, you can visit their website by clicking here.
