Police: A day after release from jail, ETX man caught driving car traded for crack
LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -
Lufkin police officers arrested a 25-year-old man for possession of a controlled substance Wednesday after he was caught driving a Ford Focus that had allegedly been traded for crack cocaine. Milton Dale Roberts' arrest came a day after he bonded out of the Angelina County Jail for unrelated drug offenses, and a failure to appear charge.
Roberts, of Lufkin, is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a charge of possession of a controlled substance between 1 and 4 grams, which is a felony. No bond has been set at this time.
Detective J.B. Smith, the public information officer for the Lufkin Police Department, said that law enforcement officials don't know if Roberts is the one who traded crack cocaine for the vehicle.
According to police reports, a complainant called the Angelina County Sheriff's Office to report that her son borrowed her Ford Focus and traded it for crack cocaine. Lufkin Police officers located the vehicle, which was being driven by Roberts, on Groesbeck Avenue early Wednesday morning. Roberts was arrested for possession of a controlled substance after officers allegedly found a pill bottle containing about 3.5 grams of crack cocaine hidden in his underwear.
Wednesday's arrest was Roberts' second run-in with the law since Monday. During a traffic stop, Lufkin Police officers allegedly found crack cocaine on Roberts' person. Then, when officers ran his driver's license, they found two outstanding arrest warrants, one for delivery of a controlled substance and one for failure to appear for evading arrest or detention.
The delivery of a controlled substance charge stems from an incident earlier this year in which Roberts allegedly sold approximately one-half gram of crack cocaine to a confidential informant within one of Lufkin's drug-free zones. Then investigators were able to identify Roberts from the confidential informant's video.
Roberts posted his $12,500 bond and was released from the Angelina County Jail on Tuesday.
