ATHENS, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas high school celebrated one of its teachers today by having an ice cream social.

The teacher won 'Teacher of the Year' award in Region 7 for the state of Texas, and remains a finalist for the state award, 'Teacher of the Year.'

Blue Bell Ice Cream came to Athens High School this afternoon to give an award, and a tub of ice cream, to honor Ms. Cynthia Kling.

In addition to Ms. Kling's award, the company also gave ice cream bars to all the students in the high school.

Ms. Kling first won teacher of the year at her school, then district, and now region. She says to win at the regional level, she wrote several essays on her philosophy of teaching, and the problems she has faced and overcome.

"It's almost surreal. There's so many people, and they are so talented and so creative. Just to be honored after 23 years of teaching. After that to finally get some recognition for the work I've put in. It's a humbling honor," said Ms. Kling.

Region 7 covers most of East Texas, and is based out of Kilgore. There are 20 regions in the state of Texas.
