Small Town Sees Rash Of Violence

Investigators in Van Zandt County are stretched thin, following a week where two people were killed and another was left critically injured.

All three incidents happened in Wills Point.  The first was early Monday, when police were called to a railroad crossing east of town.  There they found the body of a 31-year-old man, apparently run over by a train. It's being investigated as a homicide.

The second incident happened just a day later.  Police were called to a home on Howell St. where they found two women, allegedly shot by the boyfriend of one of the women.  70-year-old Bernardino Ybarra, of Quinlan, is in the Van Zandt County jail.  He's charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

One of his alleged victims, 47-year-old Juanita Perez, is in critical condition at a Dallas hospital.  The other woman shot was treated for her injuries and released.

The last incident happened Friday.  Police were called to a home on O'neil St.  They found the body of a woman in her 60's, apparently beaten to death.  Authorities say the two deaths are being investigated as homicides. However, an additional murder charge could be added if Perez' condition worsens.

City officials said that would be the first murder charge in the city in about 10 years.
