WEB EX: VA singer could become youngest gospel award winner
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Nyasia only uses her first name when she performs, and there is a big voice behind that name.
The 14-year-old has been singing since she was three-years-old. She prefers to sing music with a message and for her, that is gospel music.
"It has a different type of feel to it, and I just love the way I feel when I sing," said Nyasia.
Many people love the way they feel when she sings and that inspired the Clover Hill High School freshman to make an album. It is entitled "Take Off." She has even made a music video to go along with the title song.
"In this generation, people are always putting other people down and it's so much negative music out there. But my music is inspirational," said Nyasia. "So, I want people to feel happy all the time. I don't want anybody to tell them that they can't do it, because if you trust in god, you can do anything."
She speaks from experience. She has met some "heavyweights" in the gospel industry, including Dr. Bobby Jones, Earnest Pugh, and Jonathan Nelson. Nyasia has sung to crowds filled with thousands of people. She has even signed autographs for them.
All of this has lead to her biggest achievement yet - she is a nominee for the 2013 Stellar Music Awards.
The Stellar Awards are perhaps the highest honors in the gospel music industry. Nyasia's album made the cut, and now her name is listed in the "Children's Project of the Year" category. She is the youngest soloist on the list.
"My mom was like all hyper and stuff like, 'Oh my gosh! You made it! you made it!'" said Nyasia.
She hopes to walk away with the award on January 19 in Nashville. However, while she is excited, she says whether she gets the award or not she plans to always use her voice for her main purpose.
"I think that I was called to honor God. I wasn't called for anything else. And even if I get older and decide to go to R&B or something like that, it would be to bring more people to God's kingdom," said Nyasia.
