ETX woman dies during early morning flood

Posted: Updated:

Released by the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office:

This morning low level flooding led to the death of a Nacogdoches County woman after the vehicle she was in was swept from the roadway. The driver apparently attempted to cross a flooded section of FM 95 south of Chireno. Emergency crews were called to the scene shortly before 7:00 a.m. They managed to rescue the driver who was in the swift floodwater holding to a tree. The body of his passenger, Chanda Pipes, 35 years of age of Martinsville, was not located for several hours. Their vehicle was apparently swept downstream and has yet to be recovered.

Chanda was the daughter of one of our County employees. Our hearts go out to her family during this time and we ask that you lift them in your prayers.

We also want to thank the efforts of those that worked on this rescue: Chireno and Etoile VFDs and officers from Texas Parks & Wildlife, DPS and the Sheriff's Office, as well as the TxDOT, Road & Bridge Crews and utility company employees that have been out working in these weather conditions.

Although no major highways are closed at this time, Nacogdoches County has several County Roads and Farm-to-Market Roads that have water across the roadway. Even though the rains have lightened in our area we may still experience rising rivers and streams due to rainwater flowing to us from other counties. Several areas of our County have suffered electrical power loss due to downed trees falling across power lines. For your own safety, please do not attempt to cross flooded roadways or go around barricades and do not approach downed power lines.
