ETMC emergency workers save man's life during ETX fair

Posted: Updated:

East Texas Medical Center EMS have saved a man after he suffered from a life-threatening heart problem while enjoying the East Texas State Fair.

This year is the first year ETMC EMS have been able to transport back and forth throughout the crowded fair on bicycles.

This new solution proved to be successful on opening day, Friday, September 21.

An East Texas man went into cardiac arrest, and EMS was alerted fairly quickly. Thanks to the maneuverability of the bicycles. They were able to start CPR and use a defibrillator.

"We knew we could maneuver better with our bicycles but we didn't realize we could actually roll through the buildings, we hadn't thought about that. This particular case we actually rolled through Harvey Hall to get to a patient and it actually saved a couple minutes, which potentially, in that situation, that could mean their life," said ETMC EMS general manager Neal Franklin.

Franklin said he was able to talk to the patient, who was treated and released from the hospital, and says he thanks them for saving his life.
