The breaks started around 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon and continued into the evening.
A total of seven water main breaks in seven hours, enough to keep crews working through the night.
"We don't have a definitive cause of this. However, we had been working on one of our elevated storage tanks. It may be that the breaks are associated with the trying to get the tank back online and refilled after the repair that we did to it," said Gregory Morgan, Managing Director of Utilities and Public Works for the City of Tyler.
Morgan said the breaks are of different types, which makes it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause.
"We are looking at the situation to see if there is a cause and what we could do in the future that may or may not allow the same thing to happen," Morgan said.
Seven in one day is more than average, but Morgan said overall, they've seen less water main breaks in this fiscal year than last.
According to Morgan, the city had 556 water main breaks in the fiscal year of 2011. In the 2012 fiscal year, which ends September 30, Morgan said the city has had about 250 water main breaks.
"There's no way to chart what it's going to be in any one given year. Main breaks are impacted by a large number of conditions, soil conditions, weather conditions can impact it," Morgan said.
Morgan said they will continue to investigate if there is a connection between the repairs they made to the storage tank and the water main breaks in the city.
Tyler city officials said they are unsure how many East Texans were without water, but tell us crews wrapped up their work early this morning.
Morgan said to the best of his knowledge, everyone's water has been restored.
