CANTON, TX (KLTV) - The Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial in Canton honors Military men and women who serve our country.
But for one special East Texas family, the memorial has many meanings. Harry Fontenot, who uses his father's birth name instead of adopted name of Tanner, is a past chairman and a present director. His father Harold is also a director and his mother Mady is a volunteer at the Memorial Center.
Harry served twenty years in the Air Force, was in the First Persian Gulf War and was Involved in recovery operations in the Oklahoma City bombing. Harold served two tours of duty in Vietnam and survived three helicopter crashes.
As much as her son and husband love this country, it may be Mady who loves America the most. Mady lived in a Nazi Concentration camp from the time she was nine months old until she was six. It was American forces who freed her and saved her life. Mady met Harold when she was eighteen and although Harold spoke no French and Mady spoke no English, love bloomed and they were married in 1959.
