Thousands of tires causing big problems for East Texans

HENDERSON, TX (KLTV) -

Thousands of tires stored on an East Texas property have neighboring East Texans upset.

The tires are stored in the 700 block of County Road 207 West in Henderson.

"Just get them out of here; that's all I want is for them to be gone. They're an eyesore, they're a problem to people's health, and they're just a breeding ground for everything you don't want," said Noelle Keen who lives on the property where the tires are stored.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said the man storing these tires is a registered transporter, but does not have a scrap tire storage license, which
is required if you are going to store more than five hundred scrap or used tires on the ground.

A satellite view taken from Google Earth shows just how many tires are on the property.

"About a year and half ago the tires behind me here started piling up and they just never quit. They've been sitting there ever since," Keen said.

Neighbors said their main concern are what the tires are bringing into the neighborhood.

"Flies, snakes, mosquitoes and it's just everything," said neighbor Tamacia Reddic.

She said the mosquitoes are so bad many parents keeps their children inside.

"They are everything to me. I don't want to have to worry about mosquitoes or snakes or anything like that," said Keen about her three children.

With confirmed cases of West Nile and a breeding ground next door, the main concern are the mosquitoes.

"We have to spray them down with the Off spray you know; we have to spray them down all over from head to toe and they still get ate up," Reddic said.

At this point, TCEQ says their litigation division is investigating this case.
