Police: Argument leads to man driving down interstate with girlfriend on the hood

GEORGIA (KFVS) - Some shocking 911 tapes released: A man calls police to alert them that a man is driving down the interstate with a girl on top of his car. It all started because of an argument.

Drivers along I-85 in Atlanta were shocked.

911 calls started pouring in after they spotted a woman clinging for dear life on the hood of a Jeep.

"Our understanding is that the female and the suspect were involved in a physical altercation at their residence on Sweet Water Road," says Cpl. Edwin Ritter of the Gwinnett County Police Department, "She left the residence and went to the vehicle, sitting on the hood of the vehicle. He approached her, they started arguing and he hopped into the vehicle and took off with her on the hood before she could get off the vehicle."

"She's beating on the windshield like trying to get him to stop," said one caller. "I'm right beside him going 70 mph."

Police say the woman held onto the windshield wipers as the driver Jonathan Salas raced along the interstate.

Other drivers somehow managed to box him in and get him to stop. But the ordeal wasn't over yet.

"Holy cow, he's trying to get away from us now," said the 911 caller. "Everyone's got him trapped, trapped in. They're about to beat this guy up.

Police say other drivers finally got Salas under control, until police arrived and arrested him.

"How lucky is she? Extremely lucky, " Cpl. Ritter said. "Lucky that those people were there, they reported it they got it stopped and they basically saved her life."

Salas was driving down the highway around 85 miles per hour in the rain.

The victim told police at one point, Salas made a u-turn, almost throwing her from the car.
