Leeza Gibbons visits Tyler to support Alzheimer's Alliance
Co-host of America Now, Leeza Gibbons, spoke Monday morning in Tyler at an Alzheimer's Alliance fundraising event.
At the sold-out event, Gibbons shared her journey of taking care of her mother and grandmother who both died from the disease. Members of the Alzheimer's Alliance of Smith County say Gibbons' message inspired everyone who attended.
Gibbons captured the room's attention as she told her mother's story about battling Alzheimer's.
"I made a promise to my mother to never hide what happened to our family," said Gibbons.
Gibbons during her mother's struggle with the disease, she decided to become an advocate for those looking after loved ones suffering from Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer's Alliance of Smith County Executive Director Jana Humphrey says the stories Gibbons are familiar to so many East Texans.
"It's a very difficult thing to see unless you've lived with it because it is so isolating," said Humphrey. "It's really helpful for people taking that journey to hear from and visit with other people who know exactly how they feel and she helps put a face on the disease and what it does to families."
Those who have lost loved ones from the disease released butterflies after the event. Gibbons says the promise she made to her mother is what drives her to share her story.
