A community committed to peace

Sunday was the last day of the 2nd-annual Art of Peace Week in Tyler. Throughout the week, different community activities were designed to bring people of all religions and cultures together for one common goal.

Rabbi Neal Katz of the Beth El Synagogue spoke at the Unitarian Universal church in Tyler today as part of the peace week.

"The Art of Peace festival was designed to promote peace, to celebrate peace, to be a voice of peace through various events," Rabbi Katz said.

Art of Peace organizer, Mary Andrews, said throughout the week, organizers held a prayer of peace, a peace meal and concert and numerous other events.

"The main reason we did this, was to provide a venue, a means for those of us who feel this way about the need for peace in our world, to find each other and we have seen that happen so many times over the past week," Andrews said.

Rabbi Katz said this week really showed this communities common desire for peace.

"One of the things we knew but was confirmed over the past week was that there is a community of people in East Texas that want to get together to talk about peace, to promote  peace. So it's important not just for the ripple effect we hope it has in world politics, but that there is an acknowledgement that at least locally we want to promote peace," Rabbi Katz said.

After the amazing response the festival had today and all week, Andrews said they're looking forward to next year.

"We've had a huge number of people that said they wanted to help next year. At every single event we've had someone come to us and say, 'I have an idea,' 'Here's what I can do,' 'Just tell me what to do and I'll say yes.' It's just been over whelming," Andrews said.

At this time last year, a guy by the name of Dak Prescott was still on the draft board. In fact, the Mississippi State star didn't hear his named called until Saturday during the fourth round. Luckily for the Cowboys, Prescott turned out to be the hidden gem of the 2016 draft class. The NFL AP rookie of the year was in Longview Friday night for a fundraiser supporting the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Big Pines.
