It's time to go off your diet. Yes, the East Texas State Fair is back for the ninety-seventh time.
Not that we've told you 97 times. It started 97 years ago.
It's quite possibly 97 times better than the first East Texas State Fair with the livestock and the rides and the competitions and, of course, every kind of food you can think of, and a lot of it deep fried.
"What is that?" I asked Camie Ethredge who was eating...something.
It's fried bacon, chocolate-covered fried bacon, and it's really good. It sounds awful, but it's really good," She replied.
"You know, they call bacon the chocolate of meat," I told Camie.
"Well, let's mix chocolate and the other chocolate and that makes better chocolate." Camie observed.
"Smoking like you like it: We specialize in this little deal called a tamale slammer, and one of our best-known sellers here is the smoked meatloaf, the cowboy mignon, and the kickin' chicken. We try to do a different barbeque than most barbeque places," said owner Doug Jones.
You can try fried watermelon, crawfish balls, fried cookies and candy, or even a smoked meatloaf sandwich.
The East Texas State Fair runs from September 21-30. It's $8 for adults, $5 for youth 6-12, and five and under are free. There's more information at their web site:
