Two confirmed cases of whooping cough in Tyler

A second student at Andy Woods Elementary School in Tyler now has whooping cough.

Last week, a first grader at the school was diagnosed with Pertussis. Now, a fifth grader is recovering at home from this incredibly contagious illness.

However, school and health officials said they do not believe students are spreading it to one another.

"We do check immunization records and our district is very, very diligent about that. The children must be current on their vaccinations to be in school and all of our children are," said Nancy Jones, coordinator of health sciences for Tyler Independent School District.

"We believe that it is spread through adult contact so really the best thing you can do for your kids is take care of yourself and get yourself vaccinated," said Russell Hopkins, PHEP Director, NorthEast Texas Public Health District.
