Residents displaced after apartment fire

Posted: Updated:
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Sixteen East Texas apartments are damaged after a Thursday afternoon fire.

This two alarm fire started at the Town Village South Apartments on Muller Garden Drive. That is on South Broadway, near the Carmike Cinema.

We caught up with the man who believes his cigarette is responsible for the fire. He said he put his cigarette out on the landing and about five minutes later started smelling smoke.

"I ran inside and grabbed the fire extinguisher and tried to put it out the best I could while someone else was calling 911. Then, the fire extinguisher ran out and that's all I could do, so I started grabbing stuff out. I got the baby and all that out first. That's the only thing I was thinking about," said Jacob Allison.

"Sixteen apartments were affected in one building. Four of those received moderate to heavy smoke damage," said Deputy Fire Marshal Tony Gumber.

Gumber said they evacuated all 16 apartments and shut off the power to the building.

Authorities said residents who live in the four apartments with the worst damage will not be able to return home Friday evening.

The Tyler Fire Department said if any of those residents do not have a place to stay, they should contact the Red Cross.
