A coveted honor for a local high school band.
The John Tyler percussion ensemble was named one of the top six percussion ensembles at the state UIL competition last month in Austin.
Today state Senator Kevin Eltife presented the medals to the eight students on The Square in downtown Tyler.
The ensemble received a "1" superior rating.
"It feels good to know, to know that your hard work actually paid off because some people actually think that when you actually do something good, it doesn't pay off, but once you have done it so many times, you feel like your work is being appreciated," Montrael Sanders, a student percussionist, said.
The students' band director, Bobby McCoy, says this is the third year in a row John Tyler's percussion ensemble has qualified for the state competition. It's the second time the group has received a "superior" rating.
