WEB EX: Peanuts are looking good

TIFTON, GA - Peanuts are one of Georgia biggest cash crops and despite drought conditions, the crop is looking like it will be very large this year.

Researchers at the University of Georgia's Tifton campus are expecting to harvest three million tons of peanuts this year.

They say that new varieties of peanuts are helping the extra yields, in addition to more areas coming under irrigation, reducing the drought problems that affected the harvest in past years.

The new varieties are a result of research being conducted throughout the state.

Donald Chase a Macon County Farmer said, "without the research, I don't think we could see anything like the peanut industry that we see in Georgia today. Where we're looking at perhaps record yields in the state. I mean, if things go as expected we're going to see record yields again."

UGA-Tifton officials estimate that more than one million tons of peanuts will be sitting in storage after the harvest this year, which is expected to drive prices downward next year.
