One man is dead and another behind bars following a murder investigation Wednesday night in Huntington.
Huntington Police Chief Bobby Epperly Jr. said Daniel Cano, 26, of Huntington, was found with a gunshot wound to the back in a carport in the 400 block of E. Linn Street around 10:45 p.m. following a report of shots fired in the area.
Epperly said Cano later died at a Lufkin hospital.
According to Epperly, the investigation into the shooting led Angelina County Sheriff's Office deputies to Ben Walker Road a couple hours later, where they found the suspect, Rayvon Lee Bizzell, 26, of Huntington. Epperly said officers also came to the scene and Bizzell admitted to shooting Cano.
"There had been verbal problems in the past and he just said he went over and shot him," Epperly said.
Bizzell was booked into the Angelina County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder.
Cano had just been out of jail a little more than a month on a burglary charge. He was released on a seven-year probation agreement.
"Apparently him and the victim had some problems in the past," Epperly said. "They had been text messaging back and fourth about some verbal disagreements. He said basically the victim had been going around telling lies on him so he was upset about that. He pretty much stated that he was going to put a stop to it."
The shooting happened across the street from Huntington Elementary School.
Epperly says they searched the campus for hours to make sure Bizzell didn't ditch the gun on school property.
Hours later, he says they arrested Bizzell at a friend's home.
"And that's when they kind of had a little disturbance out there and they called 911 and sheriff's department went out there," Epperly said. "When they pulled up, they seen the gun. The defendant walked up to them and said he pretty much knew why they were there and offered to get in the patrol car."
Neighbor Sammy Ivy says it wasn't until this morning, she realized what woke her last night were gunshots.
"I didn't think anything of it because I'm always hearing somebody shoot a cat or a dog or something," Ivy said.
Epperly says during the police interview with Bizzell, he appeared cold and detached from what happened.
"He just appeared like he really didn't care," Epperly said. He didn't have any remorse or really no concern that he was going to jail or anything like that."
