Happy summer day in ETX turns to tragedy

Good afternoon, everyone; we hope your Monday is going well.

We have lots going on in the KLTV newsroom this afternoon; here's just some of what we have for you today:

First, a tragedy. A horrible accident has occurred in ETX today on an exit ramp near I-20 and FM 16 in Van Zandt County. Twelve people were traveling in an SUV on the way from Marshall to spend a fun day at Splash Kingdom in Canton when their vehicle flipped and left the roadway. DPS confirms 3 children, all girls, ages 13, six and two, were killed as a result of the rollover. Three other children were taken to Children's in Dallas. Adults were injured, as well. Join us at 5 for more.

The number of human cases of West Nile in East Texas continues to grow as the worst year on record for the disease just gets worse. New numbers have just been released, and there has been an increase since yesterday's update. Join us at 5 for the latest.

Emma Torres

At 6, capital murder charges may soon be dismissed against an East Texas mother if she fully cooperates with authorities regarding the death of her young son. The Smith County DA filed a motion to dismiss the charge against 21-year-old Emma Torres of Tyler, as she has indicated she's willing to testify against her co-defendant, Simon Lopez, who is also charged with capital murder in the death of Torres' one-year-old Jeremy Silva Torres. More on that at 6.

In lighter news, a celebration was put on to honor Elmer E. Hill's 106th birthday! Mr. Hill is the oldest living WWII veteran in the state of Texas, and spent many years as the principal of the Hill School in Henderson. We'll share more on this amazing East Texan tonight at 6.

We hope you'll join us at 5 and 6 as we livestream the news on KLTV.com, just in case you're not near a tv this evening.

We'll see you then.
