Northwest Rankin turns to new faces to lead Cougars

FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Northwest Rankin hopes to build off of a strong 2011 campaign.

The Cougars finished last season with an 11-2 record after losing to Olive Branch in the quarterfinals of the 6A playoffs.

Northwest Rankin must find a new quarterback.

Returning starter Reid Humphreys is out after having Tommy John surgery.

Coach Pete Hurt feels the Cougars are still growing.

"I'm pleased with their effort. We're nowhere where we need to be. This is only our fourth day in full pads. We have a short time frame to get this in. We're gaining on it though," said Hurt.

"We've got a new group of guys. We have to become a family again. You just keep working as hard as you can. Start the new season over," said senior wide receiver Connor Blackwell.
