Remembering tv's George Jefferson

Good afternoon, everyone; we hope you're having a great day!

Here's some of what we're working on for you in the KLTV newsroom this afternoon:

Sherman Hemsley, the actor who made the character George Jefferson famous in "The Jeffersons," has died, according to a celebrity gossip site. Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas. You can read more by clicking here.

Alex Teves

Sometimes, in dire circumstances, the best of human nature rises to the occasion. That's the case for a young man named Alex Teves. He is one of four young men who died while shielding their girlfriends from the shooter in the Colorado movie theater. One of those survivors talks about how she lost her boyfriend; KLTV's Lexie Cook has her story at 5.

A Florida mom left her baby in a shopping cart after she was caught shoplifting from a Walmart, and it was all caught on tape. You'll see the video tonight at 5, as the woman and her sister flee as they are spotted shoplifting, leaving her one-year-old son behind. Unbelievable.

We're still a week away from electing the next Smith County Sheriff, but many people are ready to see the campaigning end. Today KLTV's Melanie Torre met with a group of retired law enforcement officers who are calling for the last days of the race to be about candidates promoting themselves instead of attacking each other. She'll have that at 6.

A disabled vet is spreading a message to help other veterans help themselves. Stephen Hutson is a beekeeper and when fellow veteran J.D. Phillips found out he asked Hutson what it involved. One thing led to another and as KLTV's Jamey  Boyum will show you, they both became "busy as bees." You can check that out at 6.

And on the web, the schedule for the Great Texas Balloon has been released. You can see it and plan all your activities by clicking here.

We'll see you soon!
