Gregg County Salutes Veterans

Gregg County veterans and other East Texans remembered the nation's fallen heroes at the Gregg County Courthouse Monday.

William Perkins, the past commander of VFW Post 1183, told the crowd they made the right choice to come to the memorial statue and pay their respects this holiday.

Honoring the men and women who serve our country is an annual obligation for many, including Helen Smith of Diana.

"We have to keep alive their memory and keep alive the fact it's the men and the women that lost their lives that you and I are free," says Helen Smith, a national historian of ex-prisoners of war.

The Longview High School ROTC was also at the Gregg County memorial service to present the colors.
