One person is dead and eight injured following a five-vehicle wreck east of Crockett which has shut down both sides of the road on State Highway 7.
Department of Public Safety Troopers said 59-year-old Teddy R. Chance of Milam died in the crash Monday.
Three other people, including a person working at the construction site, were taken by helicopter to various hospitals.
Four vehicles - a Dodge pickup, Ford Ranger, a black Buick sedan and a silver Buick sedan - were stopped at a construction zone around 10:45 a.m. Monday when an 18-wheeler hit one of the vehicles from behind, causing a chain-reaction collision with the other vehicles.
Chance, the driver of the Ranger, died at the scene.
Two of those flown for medical treatment went to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, including the worker at the construction site. A third injured person was flown to Children's Hospital in Dallas.
Officials with TxDOT told the Houston County Courier the worker injured in the crash was with Pinto Construction and working as a flagger at the time of the crash.
Five people were taken to ETMC-Crockett.
The identities and conditions of those injured is not known at this time.
Officials with Crockett Fire Department, Houston County Sheriff's Office, a constable's office, East Texas Medical Center of Crockett, TxDOT and DPS responded to the scene.
