Retiring Head of Veteran's Office Honored

Veterans and county leaders turned out Thursday to honor the retiring head of Smith County's Veteran's Office.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Robert Craig was honored at a ceremony in Tyler's downtown square Thursday afternoon.  Craig was the first accredited Veteran's Service Cfficer in Smith County. He had served with the United States Air Force for over 28 years.
Smith County Judge Becky Dempsey presented him with the flag that flew outside of his office. Craig said today's ceremony is humbling.
"I don't believe that I deserve the honor," he said. "I have been honored by the fact that I've been able to serve the veterans of Smith County for going on eight years, working with two fine assistants, veteran services officers. This just takes my breath away."
May 27th will be honored as Lieutenant Colonel Robert Craig Day in Smith County.
