In a rare move, the Tyler City Council today approved the city's purchase of a home. According to officials, this is only the second time in the last three decades Tyler has done this.
The Water Department has been to Terry Wallace and Cheryl Garnett's home on Barbee Drive in South Tyler 88 times in the last seven years. The city has spent more than $50,000 to repair damage caused by flooding or sewage backup at the home.
The house is valued at $79,000. So, the city decided it would be cheaper to just buy the house and either fix it up or demolish it. The city also plans to improve drainage in the area.
Terry and Cheryl say they now plan on renting a home.
