Smith County Commissioners Monday, were presented solutions to the jail overcrowding problem. A consultant hired by the county back in March, presented commissioners with a number of different options that would bring the county into compliance with the state.
The most expensive of those options would be a brand new jail at an estimated cost of $85 million. Commissioners said the presentation is just a starting point. They plan to look at temporary housing for inmates, farming out inmates to other facilities and even hiring an independent contractor to house inmates.
County Judge Becky Dempsey has asked for more information on each of the different options. The commission plans to review those in future meetings.
